On April 29, 2021, Mr. Kan Kunthy, Vice President of Amru Rice Company, presented in the virtual launching report on benefits of rice contract farming organized by the NGO Forum Cambodia, co-organized by the CDRI Research Institute, AFD, with the support of the Swedish Embassy, Diakonia, HEKS / EPER and Oxfam.
The general objectives of this outreach webinar are : 1. Disseminate the report on the benefits of contract farming on rice, 2. Share experiences of implementing contract farming on rice, especially during the outbreak of COVID-19.
During this webinar, Mr. Kan Kunthy had a 10-minute keynote presentation to the workshop, which he first summarized the background of Amru Rice, which started in 2011 and he also highlighted the Royal Government’s policy of encouraging rice exports, which is a driving force behind the start of the rice trading business of Amru Rice.
In the presentation, he also focused on the implementation of Amru Rice’s contract farming business model with the Agricultural Cooperative (AC), which started in 2014, the first year of Amru’s project in collaboration with just only 8 AC in Preah Vihear province, with the presence of 200 farmers participating in organic rice first initiated. With its niche market of organic rice and SRP rice, Mr. Kanthy said that Amru Rice in 2020 has achieved a contract farming business model with 82 communities equal to 8,000 farmers.
Regarding the benefits of implementing the contract farming, Mr. Kan Kunthy also shared by focusing on the benefits of the rice producers (farmers / AC) and the buyers (Amru Rice itself).
